Using Artificial Intelligence to Decode IoT Big Data

As sensors spread across almost every industry, the Internet of Things (IoT) is causing a massive influx of big data. But how do we make use of all this data of this on a practical level in our everyday lives?

Exponentially increasing computing and the advent of the Internet of Things could bury the world in volumes of unintelligible data. To solve this problem before it gets too big to handle, the world’s thinkers are looking for intelligent technology that can make sense of the impending sea of data. A company called Arghon might have the answer.

Collie Brown is CEO of Arghon, and inventor of the Arghon Artificial Intelligence Engine, which adapts to your needs and provides access to information from around the world through sentient learning technology. In his presentation at RE.WORK Connect Summit, in San Francisco on 12-13 November, Collie will delve into current and future applications of artificial intelligence technology, introduce new topics like Phantom Technology, and discuss and the changing ways in which humans will interact with the world around them.

We caught up with him ahead of the summit to hear more about Arghon, and how we can make sense of IoT data with AI tools.

Please give us an overview of Arghon and your mission.
Arghon’s mission is to bring meaningful convenience to the world through personal artificial intelligence. Our goal is to improve the lives of users by giving them access to real-time information and services that are tailored to their needs.

Arghon is a personal artificial intelligence engine that acts as a central hub for IoT devices. Arghon interacts in real-time with users’ environment (IoT devices) and performs real-time analysis, providing instruction to IoT devices with minimal input.

How can we make sense of IoT data with AI tools?
Aha! Great question. The goal of artificial intelligence is to take large amounts of unstructured data - like that which is produced by IoT devices - and make actionable decisions about this data. In short, the AI is the tool that makes sense of the data.

Artificial Intelligence has the ability to take in large amounts of unstructured data and, through analysis, spot trends. An AI like Arghon is able to make suggestions based on the data it continuously receives.

AI is not limited to regurgitating summaries and reports. Artificial intelligence can respond instead with meaningful instructions, such as commands to devices to carry out actions.

What is the biggest challenge in doing so?
The biggest challenge in making sense of IoT data with AI tools is coming up with a standard for communication between artificial intelligence engines and IoT devices. This challenge, however, isn’t insurmountable.

We at Arghon have developed our own communication protocol that will make it easier for device manufacturers to connect their devices to the Arghon ecosystem. We have a complete suite of APIs (the RebeL API) available at arghon.com.

Our API provides a framework that can be used as a basis for coming up with a standard way of communicating between AI engines and IoT devices. Creating a standard, based on APIs like RebeL, will enable manufacturers to focus on the production of their products, rather than having to concern themselves with how their products can be integrated.

What sector or industry has the potential to have the most significant disruption by IoT?
There are three sectors that will be radically affected by IoT: home automation, automotive, and healthcare.

With regards to home automation: a typical home has many devices that are ripe for automation. Some of these devices are in the areas of in-home entertainment, appliances, lighting, and home access and security. With artificial intelligence management of these IoT devices, users can experience a dramatic increase in their quality of life.

In the automotive field, the user currently must manually configure the devices and features in their cars - from radio to heating/HVAC, navigation, and more. The Internet of Things will make these existing appliances within the car redundant, eventually replacing them. IoT devices within new driverless vehicles, and in the automotive field, will mean users no longer need to manually configure many of the settings they do today.

In the healthcare field, IoT will have the biggest impact on how illnesses are diagnosed and treated. IoT can make healthcare more affordable by increasing efficiency in diagnosing and treating patients. For example, IoT devices would make it possible for medical institutions to detect anomalies in the human body and determine a diagnosis and course of treatment. Medical institutions could more efficiently dispense medications, based on AI analysis of feedback from these dispensary devices. These devices may range in size from devices embedded in the human body to devices that monitor the environment. IoT devices can be used to monitor patients’ health and relay necessary information to physicians who can deliver more precise and customized care. Changing the way the field thinks about, and practices, medicine.

Can you describe what you mean by 'Phantom Technology’?
Phantom technology refers to the interconnection of IoT devices via artificial intelligence engines that automate and manage these devices, without need for user input, and to the benefit of devices users. Phantom technology refers to the hidden, or invisible, interactions between IoT devices that occur when they are managed by AI engines.
