Democratizing Medical Imaging with AI Assisted Image Acquisition and Interpretation
Too many people are dying or are adversely affected by treatable medical conditions. For cardiovascular disease the number of people dying per year is over 600,000 in the United States and is over 17.9 million people globally. The gateway to diagnosis and management of cardiovascular disease is the echocardiogram exam that takes ultrasound images of the heart and is performed over 20 million times per year in the U.S. Because the echocardiogram suffers from issues of quality, value and access, diagnosis and management of cardiovascular disease is hindered. The core problem with the echocardiogram is user variability and the expertise needed to perform and interpret exams. I will talk about the approach we have taken at Caption Health to address this problem with artificial intelligence. With Caption AI, we developed and clinically tested an investigational ultrasound imaging system that uses AI to aid in the acquisition and interpretation of echocardiograms.
Kilian Koepsell is Co-Founder and CTO of Caption Health (formerly Bay Labs), a health-tech startup with the mission to make medical imaging universally accessible to improve health for individuals and populations. Prior to Caption Health, Kilian was Researcher at UC Berkeley’s Redwood Center for Theoretical Neuroscience. His work included research of neural processing at various scales, ranging from single neurons in the early visual system to large scale neural network dynamics during cognitive tasks. He was an early member at IQ Engines (acquired by Yahoo!) and at FiveStars (YC 2011). Kilian obtained his PhD in Theoretical Physics from Hamburg University, and has theld research positions at the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics, at King's College London, and at the former Redwood Neuroscience Institute.
