Fiona McEvoy

Fiona J McEvoy is an AI ethics writer, researcher, speaker, and thought leader based in San Francisco, CA. She was named one of the 100 Brilliant Women in AI Ethics 2020 (and 2019) by Lighthouse3. Fiona is the founder of - a website that evaluates the ethical and societal impact of new technologies - and has published articles in media outlets including Slate, VentureBeat, and The Next Web. She regularly presents her ideas to AI conferences, and in 2019 spoke at events in Canada, Spain, Portugal, and Mexico (as well as across the USA).

Fiona holds a graduate degree in Philosophy with a special focus on the ethics of tech, and continues to publish academic work. In 2019 she presented her paper “AI-Driven Behavior Change and the Parameters of Ethical Permissibility” to IACAP 2019 in Mexico City, and her latest article, “Political Machines: Ethical Governance in the Age of AI” was published in the peer-reviewed journal, Moral Philosophy & Politics in October 2019.

Before grad school, Fiona spent nearly ten years working as a campaigner, PR and Public Affairs specialist in the UK, running consumer-facing single issue campaigns for a range of non-profits, trade associations and thinktanks.
