Jimmy is an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at the University of Toronto, as well as a faculty member at the Vector institute. He is finishing his PhD with Geoff Hinton, and one of the rising stars in the academic ML community. Jimmy completed his BAc, MSc at UofT working with Brendan Frey and Ruslan Salakhutdinov, and had worked during his undergraduate studies with Steve Mann. He has previously spent time at Google Deepmind and Microsoft Research, and received the prestigious Facebook Graduate Fellowship for 2016 in machine learning. His primary research interests are in the areas of artificial intelligence, numerical optimization, and neural networks. He developed various novel visual attention models and among his many accomplishments is the Adam Optimizer, a highly popular framework for first-order gradient-based optimization of stochastic objective functions He is broadly interested in questions related to sample efficient deep learning, reinforcement learning and cognitive science.
