Detecting Cognitive Conditions from a Simple Clock Drawing using Artificial Intelligence

The rise in the number of people suffering from cognitive conditions, such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, is a trend expected to continue over the coming decades. While research is underway on many fronts already, improving early diagnosis remains critical to allow for a potential slowing of the subject’s cognitive decline. The Clock Drawing Test, a simple pen and paper test in which the subject is asked to draw a pair of clocks, has been used for over 50 years in the medical community to differentiate normal individuals from those with cognitive impairments. A team of researchers at MIT partnered with clinicians to create a version of the test administered with a digitizing ballpoint pen that uses artificial intelligence techniques to analyze the drawings and detect signs of cognitive conditions. In this talk, William presents the developments of this new test that is quick to administer, cheap, and improves the screening and diagnosis of these cognitive conditions.

William did his undergraduate studies in mathematics and computer science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and recently completed his Master in computer science there, where he focused on artificial intelligence applied to medicine. He is particularly interested in the intersection of technology and healthcare. He also works for Romulus Capital, a Boston-based VC firm.
